Reflections from Proverbs 15
This morning I spent time reading Proverbs 15.
As I worked my way through the chapter, one thought stopped me in my tracks. I couldn’t move on because it kept echoing in my mind.
Wisdom affects generations.
The longer I sat with that thought, the more another truth became clear.
Foolishness affects generations too.
We often think our decisions only affect us. We convince ourselves that our attitudes, our words, or the way we choose to live are personal matters. But Scripture paints a different picture.
The life we live today will shape someone else’s tomorrow.
Every decision is planting something.
Every conversation is leaving a mark.
Every habit is creating a pattern.
Whether we realize it or not, someone is learning from the way we respond to pressure, disappointment, success, conflict, and joy.
Our children are watching.
Our coworkers are watching.
Our friends are watching.
The people we lead are watching.
Even those who never say a word are often learning from the example we set.
That’s why wisdom matters.
It’s also why foolishness is so destructive.
When foolishness is passed from one generation to the next, it often takes incredible courage, humility, and the grace of God for someone to break the cycle. We’ve all seen families where anger, addiction, pride, bitterness, or fear have been handed down for generations.
But the opposite is true as well.
When wisdom is passed down…
When it is received…
When it is lived…
Entire families change.
Churches become healthier.
Communities become stronger.
Legacies are rewritten.
As I continued reading Proverbs 15, I noticed that wisdom isn’t described as simply knowing more.
It is revealed in the ordinary rhythms of life.
Wisdom changes the way we speak.
The way we listen.
The way we receive correction.
The way we treat people.
The way we trust God.
One verse especially challenged me:
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
— Proverbs 15:1
Immediately I found myself praying, “Lord, help me with this.”
How many conflicts could be avoided if I responded with gentleness instead of defensiveness?
How many relationships could be strengthened if I cared more about reflecting Christ than winning an argument?
As I kept reading, I started writing down the characteristics of a wise life that Proverbs 15 points us toward.
Lessons I Don’t Want to Forget
- Have a soft and gentle tongue.
- Listen to the Father’s instruction.
- Continue seeking understanding.
- Share knowledge generously.
- Don’t be influenced by foolish voices.
- Fear the Lord.
- Surround yourself with godly counsel.
- Welcome correction instead of resisting it.
- Pay attention when God speaks in season.
- Walk in humility.
One verse particularly challenged my thinking:
“Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure with turmoil.”
— Proverbs 15:16
That verse made me stop.
Our culture constantly tells us to pursue more.
More success.
More influence.
More recognition.
More possessions.
More accomplishments.
But Proverbs reminds us that peace with God is worth more than abundance without Him.
I’d rather have less and walk closely with Jesus than gain everything this world offers while losing the peace that only He can give.
As I finished writing in my journal, my thoughts turned toward my children.
Someday they probably won’t remember every sermon I preached.
They won’t remember every meeting I attended.
They won’t remember every accomplishment that seemed so important in the moment.
But they will remember the kind of man I became.
The same is true for every one of us.
Our greatest legacy won’t be found in what we built.
It will be found in who we became while building it.
That’s why I don’t want to simply collect wisdom for myself.
I want to pass it on.
I want my children—and the generations that come after them—to inherit something greater than success.
I want them to inherit wisdom.
Because wisdom doesn’t just change one life.
It changes generations.
And in a world that desperately needs truth, peace, humility, and hope, perhaps one of the greatest gifts we can leave behind is a life that quietly points people to Jesus.
A Question to Consider
If someone inherited your way of living…
Your speech…
Your response to conflict…
Your priorities…
Your faith…
Would it become a blessing for the next generation?
Or would they spend years trying to undo what was passed down?
Today, ask God for wisdom.
Not simply so your life becomes better.
But so your legacy becomes different.
“The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.”
— Proverbs 15:33
